El Jalapeno's

When Mongo informed me that El Jalapeño’s, a relatively new restaurant south of Bandon was my next assignment, I prepared for lengthy negotiations and primed a list of concessions with the entire length of my alimentary canal. It’s not that I don’t like Mexican food; rather my experience has been that I am just not compatible with their spices and peppers in particular. Being the consummate food critic that I am, I braced myself on that Wednesday evening for the inevitable and stepped up to the counter and ordered, what else, a chili relleno.

The dish was spicy, but delicious! Not too much egg batter and just the right amount of cheese filling. I let my novio (boyfriend) polish off the pepper. He likes his Mexican food HOT.

In addition to the chili relleno, we also selected an entrée of fish tacos, shrimp tacos and a carne asada enchilada. My relleno came with the traditional beans and rice. It was nice being able to choose among a selection of entrees or combination plates. I haven’t found too many Mexican restaurants that offer individual tacos, and when they do, they’re often pricey. El Jalapeño’s tacos are $2.00 each and the fish is not too heavily breaded. The shrimp tacos, a little more at $3.00 each are a little piece of heaven! The shrimp is broiled and accompanied by a wonderful sauce—the recipe I am told is a matter of national security. Of course I wanted to try one of each item on the menu, but the host was looking at us like we were ordering for the 7th Naval fleet and I was getting a little embarrassed.

El Jalapeño’s is very popular with the take-out crowd as evidenced by the hoards of folks that were waiting to pick up their dinner. These folks were very helpful in offering advice about what to order, and in fact didn’t hesitate to laugh boisterously when the novio asked if our order amounted to ‘a lot’ of food.

El Jalapeno's

Located at the Beach Loop intersection with Hwy 101, the outside of the building is somewhat obscure but the interior reminds me of simple Mexican hospitality. Not fancy, but the red and white decor and Spanish melodies playing on the sound system added to the ambiance. It was pretty chilly in the dining room, so you may want to bring a sweater. If you’re like me, the peppers will make your eyebrows sweat, so be prepared to disrobe.

The balance of the menu consists of traditional Mexican fare (burritos, chimichangas, quesadillas) and offers a large selection of combination plates, side dishes and several seafood options. They even offer breakfast! I can’t wait to try their chorizo and machaca! They do not serve beer and wine (at least not yet), but I was very pleasantly surprised that they presented a wonderful horchata and several flavors of aguas fresca. What a treat!

I found El Jalapeño’s to be affordable, quaint and tasty. Our entire selection came to under $20.00 including the 20% gratuity. My novio, being the compliant diabetic that he sometimes is, particularly likes the option of choosing entrees without the obligatory beans and rice. Three and ½ happy MongoThumbs!
